چکیده

Running title: ERP effects of typicality and lexicality Abstract Using a speeded lexical decision task, event-related potentials (ERP) and minimum norm current source estimates, we investigated early spatio-temporal aspects of cortical activation elicited by words and pseudowords that varied in their orthographic typicality, i.e. in the frequency of their component letter pairs (bigrams) and triplets (trigrams). At around 100ms after stimulus onset, the ERP pattern revealed a significant typicality effect, where words and pseudowords with atypical orthography (e.g., yacht, cacht) elicited stronger brain activation than items characterised by typical spelling patterns (cart, yart). At ~ 200 ms, the ERP pattern revealed a significant lexicality effect, with pseudowords eliciting stronger brain activity than words. The two main factors interacted significantly at around 160 ms, where words showed a typicality effect but pseudowords did not. The principal cortical sources of the effects of both typicality and lexicality were localised in inferior temporal cortex. Around 160ms, atypical words elicited the stronger source currents in left anterior inferior temporal cortex, whereas left perisylvian cortex was the site of greater activation to typical words. Our data support distinct but interactive processing stages in word recognition, with surface features of the stimulus being processed before the word as a meaningful lexical entry. The interaction of typicality and lexicality can be explained by integration of information from the early form-based system and lexico-semantic processes.

Title: N250 effects for letter transpositions depend on lexicality: Casual or causal? Authors:

We examined the electrophysiological correlates of one of the most influential orthographic effects: The transposed-letter masked priming effect. Transposed-letter nonword-word pairs were included (jugde-judge), as well as transposed-letter wordword pairs (casual-causal) to investigate the influence of prime’s lexicality in the transposed letter effect. The results showed that when compared aga...

Many neighbors are not silent. fMRI evidence for global lexical activity in visual word recognition

Many neurocognitive studies investigated the neural correlates of visual word recognition, some of which manipulated the orthographic neighborhood density of words and nonwords believed to influence the activation of orthographically similar representations in a hypothetical mental lexicon. Previous neuroimaging research failed to find evidence for such global lexical activity associated with n...

Deficits in Processing Characters in Chinese Developmental Dyslexia: Preliminary Results From Event-related Potentials and Time Frequency Analyses

Individuals with dyslexia have deficiencies in lexical organization and processing that are behaviorally manifested as difficulties in learning grapheme-phoneme correspondences. The present study investigates the lexical representations of Chinese reading-impaired children using event-related potentials (ERP) and time-frequency analysis. Two Cantonese-speaking male children, one with reading im...

The Temporal Courses of Phonological and Orthographic Encoding in Handwritten Production in Chinese: An ERP Study

A central issue in written production concerns how phonological codes influence the output of orthographic codes. We used a picture-word interference paradigm combined with the event-related potential technique to investigate the temporal courses of phonological and orthographic activation and their interplay in Chinese writing. Distractors were orthographically related, phonologically related,...
